Volunteering in our Library

The Grove Library greatly values the roles played by our many volunteers, who enhance and extend library services. We have a number of volunteering opportunities in the following areas:

Community History

Our Community History volunteers provide invaluable support to the Community History Librarian. These tasks suit people with an eye for detail, an interest in history, and some computer skills. Local knowledge of the people and places of Cottesloe, Peppermint Grove or Mosman Park is not necessary, but can be advantageous. Tasks may include: scanning and indexing documents, researching local history topics, or correcting computer scans. Times for volunteering in Community History are fairly flexible during week-day office hours, depending on the availability of equipment and the Community History Librarian’s schedule.

Tech Help and Digital Literacy

The Grove is actively involved in assisting seniors to access the internet and use computers in their everyday lives. We offer one-on-one help and small group workshops for beginners, as well as those needing more advanced help and assistance. If you are reasonably confident with using computers, tablets and/or smartphones, and have a patient, friendly personality, this may be the volunteering position for you! Don’t worry if you are not a tech “expert” – you only need to be a step ahead of those you are assisting, and support will be given so that you can gain more knowledge and confidence in the role.

Delivering Books to Housebound Residents

The Grove delivers library books and other items to a small number of people who, because of illness, old age or frailty, can’t come to the library themselves. If you are willing to spend an hour or two every few weeks delivering in the local area using your own car, please let us know and you will be contacted as needed.

High School and Primary School students and volunteering

Due to the specialized nature of the volunteer opportunities at the Grove, we generally do not accept primary or high school students for volunteering. Students may have the opportunity through their schools to undertake a period of work experience at the Grove.

TAFE and University Students and volunteering

Volunteering at The Grove looks great on your CV! The Grove encourages tertiary students to volunteer at the Grove if they can commit to a reasonable period of volunteer service. Students who are considering working in libraries as a future career are particularly welcome. We also regularly accept formal student placements from tertiary institutions.
